Abstract

This paper studies and presents the techniques, ethics and aesthetics of art conservation as practiced by Edson Motta, in Brazil, for over 30 years. Motta was a well-known painter when the Brazilian National and Artistic Heritage Services (SPHAN) employed him in 1944. In 1948, after two years training, he became the first Brazilian to obtain an academic professional certificate in conservation and restoration. Once back in Brazil he received the assignment of conserving the decorated interiors of the baroque churches located in the state of Minas Gerais. Although trained, exclusively, as an easel paintings conservator, Edson Motta used creativity and skill to adapt the methods and materials acquired at the Fogg to the new and complex Brazilian reality.
