Abstract

The history of photography is almost 200 years old, however, the development of conservation and preservation of photographic materials is much shorter, especially in our region, where there is still a lot to develop, but which has made significant progress in the last three decades.

Throughout his article, the most important milestones of this period will be presented, in which both the processes of training of specialists and the institutional management of collections have been developed, especially in Chile, which in some way has had a parallel development and intertwined with some Latin American countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Peru and Mexico.

There will also be a review of the experience in the management of the photographic archive of the National Library of Chile, a place where photography has been promoted as a cultural asset and where various strategies have been developed for the preservation and access of its valuable collections.
